Massage can be used to help relax and promote circulation to injured muscles. It is a helpful precursor to muscle stretches.
In swords physiotherapy we use a massage technique- deep friction massage -to break down scar tissue that often forms after a soft tissue injury. In muscle and ligament injuries scar tissue can be problematic.The scarred area is located by the chartered physiotherapist and massage is carried out in a transverse direction.This breaks down adhesion’s in the injured structure. Initially there is some discomfort to the patient but the area quickly becomes numb making treatment tolerable.
Massage and myofascial release aim to relax and stretch dysfunctional muscles. Exercises will be prescribed to follow the treatment to avoid the muscle problem returning.
Massage alone will rarely cure a problem. It is a treatment technique that forms part of the physiotherapy.
