SHIN SPLINTS

This condition is characterised by pain and sometimed swelling and redness over the affected shin bone. It is sometimes bilatteral affecting both sides. It affects runners and players of field sports mostly. It can be caused by running on unsuitable surfaces, poor footwear and /or poor foot biomechanics.

Physiotherapy Treatment for Shin Splints

The physiotherapist will take a detailed history of the symptoms to try and figure out causative factors.

Training regime will be modified as appropriate. Distance and running surface may be altered .

A biomechanical assessment will be made. Shoes in particular sports footwear will be looked at and wear patterns noted. Biomechanical correction with shoe inserts  are often needed to prevent recurrence.

To settle pain and swelling down interferential or other electrotherapeutic modalaties may be used. Ice is helpful for both pain control and swelling.

A home exercise regime will be devised to stretch any tight muscle groups and strenghten weakened ones. A full recovery is expected.
