Chest Physiotherapy

Many chest problems benefit from chest physiotherapy such as chest infections, pneumonia, cystic fibrosis and bronchiectasis. It is important that the G.P. and or respiratory physician keep  the physiotherapist informed of results of x-rays, CT scans etc. so that treatment targets the  correct area of lungs.

AIMS OF TREATMENT:

  • To encourage normal breathing rate and depth.
  • To optimise exercise levels.
  • To remove secretions.

HOW IS THIS ACHIEVED?

The physiotherapist will use a stethoscope to listen to the lungs. Rib expansion and muscle function will also be tested. A treatment plan will be devised to include breathing exercises, forced expiratory techniques, postural drainage and relaxation. Manual techniques such as “clapping” and “vibrating” the chest wall will be used if indicated. With chronic lung disease a self management program is important and patient will be instructed in this.
