Joint mobilisations Joint mobilisation is a procedure for stiff joints which usually benefit from being loosened up. In physiotherapy we often use passive joint mobilisations. The patient is relaxed – usually lying down and the physiotherapist uses her hands to loosen the involved joint. The joint is not forced past the available range. It is a comfortable treatment and has the added benefit of giving pain relief . Muscles around stiff joints often overwork – becoming tight and sore. Joint mobilisation relaxes them. At Swords physiotherapy we often combine joint mobilisations with muscle stretches to get a really good loosening effect on the stiff area. In almost all cases joint mobilisations will be followed by exercises to loosen the joint further. It is very important to do these at home, as prescribed, to maintain gains achieved during treatment. Our chartered physiotherapists will give you a printed hand out of the exercises so that you don`t forget the technique.
